If your child was recently diagnosed with autism, you have probably heard the term ABA therapy more than once. It can sound clinical at first, so here is a plain-language starting point for what it is and how it helps.
What ABA actually means
ABA stands for Applied Behavior Analysis. It is an evidence-based approach that looks at how children learn and how their environment shapes the skills they build. Good ABA is not about making a child fit a mold. It is about understanding what motivates your child and using that to teach communication, social, and daily-living skills in a way that feels natural and encouraging.
What it looks like day to day
Sessions are built around play and your child's interests. A therapist breaks larger skills into small, achievable steps and celebrates progress along the way. Because every child is different, a board-certified behavior analyst designs a plan around your child's specific strengths and goals, then adjusts it as your child grows.
Your role as a parent
You are part of the team from day one. The most lasting progress happens when the strategies that work in session carry over to home and everyday routines, so parent coaching is a core part of the process. You know your child best, and that insight shapes the plan.
